August Cotton shouldn’t be here. When a tragic accident calls him home to Magnolia Springs, this returned Veteran adds his parents to the list of things he’s lost in recent years, right along with his IED
detection dog and his left leg. As the sole guardian of his four-year-old sister, August must rely on his Marine training in raising a tiny hellion who’s as stubborn as he is. But the Corps could never prepare him for this. Nor could they prepare him for Olivia Anders, a woman who’ll stop at nothing to get her
way.

As owner of Paws for Cause, Olivia is no stranger to the broken men and women who return home from war. She’s no stranger to broken dogs either. In fact, she’s made it her mission to pair the two and enrich both of their lives, but pairing ornery and aloof August Cotton will take some work.  The last thing August wants is some pushy southern woman occupying his parents’ bed and breakfast and forcing him to open up about the hell he narrowly escaped, but that’s exactly what Olivia intends.

They complete one another, and yet they can’t stand to be in the same room.

Can Olivia make this hardened Marine feel again and finally show his heart the way back home?

*** Intended for a mature 18+ audience only. This book may contain triggers for some readers.

Renee’s Five Star Review:
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review for Stephanie’s Book Reports.

August Cotton feels like he shouldn’t even be in this world. A tragic accident though calls him home to Magnolia Springs adding his parents to the list of things he has lost in recent years right along with his IED detection dog and his left leg. Now he is the sole guardian of his four year old sister. He’s relying on his Marine training to raise a tiny hellion who is as stubborn as he is. The Corps though never prepared him for this. Nor is he prepared for Olivia Anders, a woman who will stop at nothing to get her way, to come crashing into his live.

Olivia as the owner of Paws for Cause is no stranger to broken men and women who return home from war. She is not stranger either to broken dogs. It is her mission to pair the two and enrich both of their lives. She never expected pairing ornery and aloof August Cotton to take so much work. August may not like that she is now occupying his parents bed and breakfast and forcing him to open up about the hell he narrowly escaped but that is exactly what Olivia intends to do. They complete each other but can’t stand being in the same room. Can Olivia make the hardened Marine August is feel again and finally show his heart the way back home?

To say I devoured this book is just about an understatement. Be prepared that once you pick up this book your not going to want to put it down for anything. So what if the world outside is blowing up you’ve got a Carmen Jenner book in your hands that must be read. I loved this story so much. I love how Carmen Jenner is able to write about soldier’s returning home different men and women than they were when they left home to fight in war. She has this ability to delve you so deep into their lives it is like your living it right along side these characters. August Cotton has fought for this country right alongside his IED detection dog. A dog that is more than a dog to August. He was his sanity at times in the Afghan desert and the only IED detection team available to the soldiers to help protect them. A terrible moment and everything in August’s life is changed in the blink of an eye and he finds himself anywhere but home wondering why he is even still alive because he sure doesn’t want to to. I fell so in love with this character. Underneath all of the PTSD and loss of his leg is a man at heart who just want’s to love and be loved and I could feel that with every word written about him. He has no idea how he is going to raise his baby sister Bettina and is not doing a very good job of it when a woman shows up at his door. Olivia was contacted by August’s parents to come to Magnolia Springs to set up an extension of her Paws for Cause, which pairs soldier’s and dogs together, in their town with there hope being that August will come back home to them and will get the help he needs. She has no idea that his parents have been killed in a tragic accident and August is pretty much forced to let her stay in his now home which his parents ran as a bed and breakfast. And here is where the fun begins. One cranky Marine and one stubborn southern girl on a mission of her won and you just sick back, get comfortable and enjoy the ride. Olivia too is a strong female character that I equally loved. Stubborn is not a strong enough word to describe her and she holds some dark secrets of her own. I loved too how this story has little mini stories inside the bigger story.

Once again Carmen Jenner has written a book that will live with me for years to come. Her words are just like magic to my soul and I love that you can feel how much these characters mean to her from her writing. You do not want to miss this book. Your not doing yourself any favors if you do. If you’ve never read a Carmen Jenner book your in for a treat and I guarantee you will end up reading everything she has ever written as soon as you finish The Way Back Home. Thank you Carmen Jenner from bringing these characters to life and for focusing on a issue that does not in my opinion have near enough attention drawn to it. Our Veteran’s do not by a long shot have near the resources and care they need when they come home from fighting wars for us to keep our freedom intact. This book will change your way of thinking and open up you heart and eyes in way you will never expect. I think it is a book the whole world needs to read and learn from.

In all reality, August Cotton should not be alive. After losing a leg and his IED detection dog in war, August returns home a broken man both physically and mentally. As if that’s not enough for one man to deal with for a lifetime, he is even more devastated when he learns that both of his parents have been killed in a car accident leaving him as the sole guardian for his four year old sister, Bettina. He is at a complete loss as to how to raise the tiny tornado who proves to be just as stubborn as he is. Throw in a woman who is equal parts beautiful and infuriating, and poor August thinks he is going to lose his mind.

Olivia Anders owns a business named Paws for Cause, and her mission is to pair broken veterans with broken dogs. The goal is to bring the two together to create healing and peace. She has never met a vet she couldn’t help, but she meets her match with August Cotton. He is broken and ornery as all get out. The last thing August wants to deal with is a pushy woman who wants to get all up in his business. Unfortunately for him, Olivia is as stubborn and determined as he is. Can she help this rough and hardened Marine learn to not only live again but love as well?

Wow, this book was beyond awesome! I felt a myriad of emotions while reading it. I laughed. I cried. I got really pissed off, but it was all worth it in the end! The message that this book portrays is strong and poignant. Through her words, Carmen Jenner has given the reader some much needed insight into what our veterans go through. If you let it, this book has the power to not only change the way you think but the way you treat our veterans as well!

Phenomenal job, Carmen!!

Excerpt

“You know, if you want to see me naked and sweaty, all you have to do is ask, darlin’.”
“I do not . . . I wasn’t . . .” My words are stolen from me as he stalks forward with a maddening smirk on his face. “What are you doing?”
“Getting tired of waiting for you to be okay with this.”
“August, we talked about boundaries.” I press my hand to his chest because he’s too close, and I can’t think straight with the heady scent of his sweat and sandalwood soap distracting me. It wasn’t my intention to run my hand over that sweat, to feel the hard-won muscle beneath, but here I am, petting
him as if he’s my favorite kitty.
“No. You talked about boundaries. I told you I was gonna fight, and I ain’t above fightin’ dirty.”
“How dirty?” I breathe.
August’s lips curl up into a smile. “So dirty.”
Both hands snake around my waist and he lifts me onto the counter, wedging his hips between my thighs. He hooks a finger in the sash and unties my robe as if he were opening a gift made just for him. I wrap my legs around his hips to pull him closer, and that’s all the admission he needs. He threads a
hand through my hair and pulls my neck back to expose the tender flesh to his mouth. I close my eyes and whisper his name as my whole body turns to flame, starved for the oxygen that only his touch can bring. His hot mouth trails down my neck, his hands cup my breasts, squeezing, kneading, and I slide a hand between us, into the waistband of his shorts. I take his hard length in my hand, stroking him from base to tip. August grunts as he pushes my negligee out of the way with frenzied hands. His fingers find me bare and exposed with no panties.
“So fucking’ dirty,” he groans, wetting his lips.
