About Hidden In Lies

Who needs love when you have money?
It used to be enough, but now it’s not.
Not since he walked into my life and made me question everything.
Now I want more, but I know that’s impossible.
Things aren’t always as they seem.
My true self is hidden, and that works for me.
Or it did.
I hide in a bed of deception to disguise myself, and I’m good at it.
Or I was.
I’m Elizabeth Fitzgerald.

I’m a Senator’s wife.
And I hate my life.

Today is Alex’s first full day on the job as my personal security detail, and I don’t know why, but there’s a nervous energy surrounding me. No matter what I do, I can’t shake it. I don’t know if it’s the fact that a stranger is going to be watching my every move and analyzing me, or if it’s the fact that he’s the sexiest man I’ve ever laid eyes on. Either way, I feel jittery, like I just drank ten shots of espresso at the thought of seeing him in several short minutes.

Cal’s locked himself in his study to make a few phone calls. He pretends it’s for my benefit so that I don’t get bored with his conversations, but I know that’s not the case. He’s made it clear that I don’t belong in his business affairs. But, I do as I’m expected; give him a kiss on the cheek, and tell him I’ll be ready to leave when he’s done. Right before he closed the heavy, oak door to his office, he poked his head out and asked that I tell Alex that we’ll be leaving in an hour.

So here I am, walking down the hall to the bedroom he’ll be occupying for the unforeseeable future. I take each step slowly, my fingers twisting together as I rehearse what I’m going to say to him.

“Hello, Mr. Matthews,” I say under my breath to myself and let out a sigh. No, that sounds dumb. “Good morning, Mr. Matthews—er, Alex.” Why do I suddenly feel like a sixteen year old girl talking to her crush for the first time? This shouldn’t be that hard. When I get to his door, I smooth out my dress, pin my shoulders back, stand up straight, and prepare myself to knock on the door. It’s slightly ajar, so I assume it’s okay to come in.

I walk in and say, “Mr. Matthews, we’ll be—“ My words abruptly die on my lips as I take in the sight in front of me. Alex has walked out of his en suite bathroom wearing nothing but a towel draped low around his hips. My mouth goes dry and I forget the whole reason I’m in here. Beads of water glide down his firm chest, over his rippled abs, along that delicious V-cut, and end at the towel that doesn’t leave much to the imagination.

When my eyes come back up to meet his, I’m met with a cocky, lopsided grin and I’m instantly mortified. I open and close my mouth several times to speak only to forget how to. My brain couldn’t string together a group of words right now if my life depended on it.  Piercing blue eyes stare into mine, waiting for me to spit out whatever it is I came here to say. After several awkward moments, he finally bails me out.

“Is there something I can help you with, ma’am?” He tries to suppress the smile threatening to spread across his face, but I see his lips twitch letting me know he finds this quite entertaining.

Jerk.

Finally coming back to my senses, I clear my throat. “Yes, Cal and I will be ready to leave in about thirty minutes for him to make his speech.”

He nods, amusement still in his eyes. “I’ll be ready to go when you are.”

With a tight smile on my face, I nod in response. I’m about to walk out of the room when I stop and say over my shoulder, “Next time close the door.”

“Next time knock.” He arches an eyebrow, challenging me to retort to his response. After all, this is his room and I’m the one who barged in unannounced. Feeling my cheeks heat up, I turn around and make a hasty retreat making sure to close the door behind me. I lean against the wall after I walk down the hall a little ways and look up at the ceiling.

This has trouble written all over it.
