Ransom

Within the family, we had no secrets. Our lives were intertwined, and the darkness that came with our way of life was something we all shared. Accepted. Had been born into. But for ten years, I’ve had one thing that was mine. Something I kept to myself. A source of light when things got heavy. The nerdy, overlooked tutor from high school who had been a breath of fresh air while helping me pass British Literature was someone I hadn’t let go of. Sure, it had been ten years since we’d seen each other, but that wasn’t important. Our texting was what I needed. Her wittiness had the ability to make me laugh and lighten my mood with her comebacks. She had never tried to impress me or flirt. It was the strongest relationship I’d ever had with a female, but it was also platonic, which was why it lasted. Noa Raines was my calm in the storms of life, and I wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize that.Β

Noa

When faced with a situation you weren’t expecting and have no idea how to navigate, one normally asks for advice from someone they trust. Typically, I’d text out my problem to my texting pen-pal and ask him what to do. Except this time, my issue was with him. In the flesh, in front of me, glaring at me like he’d rather lick the bottom of his shoe than speak to me. I had no logical reason why he should dislike me on sight. He didn’t recognize me, that I knew. The name he’d been given was my pen name. One I had actually chosen because of him. Ironic that he’d made a snarky comment about it.Β

How was the man sitting across from me the same one I’d talked to almost daily for ten years? This man was cruel, rude, and although he was still mouthwatering, I didn’t like him. And he didn’t deserve to know who I was now. I’d walk out of here keeping that to myself. The next time he texted, he’d go unanswered. If he wanted to treat others so harshly, then I’d return the favor.Β Β

Renee’s Five Star Review

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie’s Book Reports.

This is the story of Ransom and Noa. If you have been reading the Mississippi Smoke Series then you know who Ransom is. Or who he appears to be. He is cocked as all get out and always takes what he wants and make not apologies for anything he does. Noa is a student librarian. She is bullied something terrible. Made fun of, ignored, taunted, her braces, you name it and they bully her about it. You would think that home would be her safe place, but that’s not true in Noa’s case. Her mother and her boyfriend are just as bad. She has learned the hard way to keep her head down, work hard and remain as invisible as possible. She has a dream of getting out of Madison, Mississippi, and she is going to get out if it is the last things she ever does. On the day that one of the most popular boys at school speaks to her she thought things were looking up. Until, she realized that Ransom wants something for her. To be his tutor. He needs help with his British Literature so that he could understand what Shakespeare was saying. This however leads to this odd place with them. They aren’t in a relationship but things are different. I loved these moments of them together. I thought my little heart would melt and they even kept talking off and on when they finished high school and moved on to college. This has gone one for sixteen years. However, I didn’t like the way in high school that if he wasn’t with her as his tutor he didn’t act like he knew who she was around his friends. Now that she is gone I kind of was hoping that she would be all HA In Your Face buddy about that. But to Ransom those text are his secret and she probably doesn’t realize just how much light she brought to him on his darkest days. However, she has been keeping secrets. Her career is not what he thinks and she is super successful author of spicy romance books. When they do finally meet again he is so rude and dismissive. It of course leaves Noa hurt and confused. But you have to read the book to find out what all happens. I loved this story. I loved the secret of their text and how much they meant to him and she had no idea. But man did I want to smack Ransom sometimes. I loved Noa. This poor girls had horrible teenage years but she did not give up on her dreams and got out of the small town in Mississippi. If you have not been reading this series, then you are missing some amazing books. I fyou have and are ready to read this one, you are going to love every single second of it.
