Synopsis

I’m needy.

I’m broken.

Cutting breaks through my numbness, but only opens more wounds.

Depression, self-harm, bullying….that’s my reality.

Sex and guys….that’s my escape.

The space between the truth and lies is blurred leaving me torn, lost and confused. And while the monsters that live in my head& try to beat me– the two men that I love try to save me.

This is my story of friendship, heartache, and the grueling journey that is mental-illness.

Sometimes you have to get lost in order to be found…

Review 4.5 stars

I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Therapy is a story that I am so glad was told.  It covers a lot of hard topics from bullying, self harm, suicide, and loss in a way that makes for an amazing story without being too much for the reader to handle.

I really enjoyed the progression of the story.  It starts out with Jessica being a teenager who has a crappy home life and is bullied at school who struggles with self harming herself and other unknown mental issues but then it transitions to Jessica as an adult still struggling with  her mental health.  Finally it transitions into recovery.

Jessica is defended from bullies by only one person, Jace.  They become friends and develop a strong bond that turns into a love for each other but it seems that it isn’t meant to be because they keep hurting each other.  They are not healthy for each other and Jace keeps trying to fix her instead of encouraging her to fix herself like she needs.

Then there’s Kingsley he’s rough around the edges, sweet, encouraging, and he sees Jessica behind all the walls.  He’s not afraid to call her on the act she puts on.  You know the saying that people come into your life for a reason?  I believe this is true for Kingsley and Jessica.  They both got very important stuff from the other.

Even though Jessica was a little messed up she is am amazing woman to me.  She suffered and fought against the mental issues that were going on in her head for so long.  She had to deal with so much loneliness, self doubt, and heartbreak but she is a fighter.  She fights through it all and discovers how to have inner strength and fight for herself and her life.

I loved the story.  It was filled with so many emotions, love, loss, hate, anger, heartbreak, and strength.  It was also pretty hot.

You need to read this story from the amazing dedication all the way through to the authors notes.  It is a good story but it also has some very important messages that I am so glad that the author was willing to share with us.  I thank her for sharing and I think people will look at the message and see that if they struggle with mental illness they can get help and they aren’t the only ones.

Excerpt

Married. Thinking about Jace being married to someone else puts a crack in my armor. It hurts; it burns my throat as I try to swallow the acidic thought of it down.

“Well then, in four weeks you should get married. Buy a big fancy house and go to charity dinners with your mother and wife. You can have the white picket fence and everything. It sounds like a perfect happily ever after, Jace. Don’t give it up for some broken girl you slept with once.” I bite out. I’m doing my best to keep it together, but I’m slowly unraveling. I love him; I hate him. I want him to stay; I need him to go. My contradicting thoughts circle my mind like vultures.

“Jessica, falling in love can’t always be a happily ever after or a once in a lifetime kind of story. Those happen in books, in movies. This is life and it’s real. Life has no script, no outline. We broke the rules of love long ago. All I know for sure is that with you, the rules will never apply.”

Before dejectedly walking out, he stops to look at me once more.

“And you weren’t just a girl I slept with once. You’re a girl I’ve loved—always.” And then he’s gone.
