OMG! I have never, I mean never had a book affect me like Tainted by Love did! Because of that, this is hands down the most difficult review I have ever written. I will tell you now that I am not going to reveal many details about the story line because this is one of those rare books that you must experience first hand. Okay, here we go. After reading the first few pages of this book, I knew this story was going to gut me so much so that I almost stopped. Instead of giving up, I took a few deep breaths and convinced myself to persevere, and boy I am glad that I did! As I stated earlier, I have never had a book move me on such a emotional level before, and I feel it is important that I tell you why. I lost my beloved brother to Aids in 1995. Back then, it was something you didn’t dare tell people. I know you may be thinking “Oh, it couldn’t have been that bad”, but it was. Even people that didn’t necessarily condemn people who were diagnosed as HIV positive were afraid, and fear will make people do crazy things. Case in point-one of my brother’s friends who tested positive was the son of a Baptist minister in Alabama. When the congregation found about his son’s diagnosis, they not only demanded the father’s resignation but made their lives hell to the point that these poor people felt compelled to pack their bags and leave the only home they had ever known. Terrible I know, but it happened. I commend this author for having the courage to write a story that is so much more than boy meets girl. In my opinion, we need more powerful stories like this one that will truly have an impact on society.

While reading this book, it was obvious that Ms. Jones did a lot of research on this topic. Through her beautiful, honest, and sometimes heart wrenching words, this author shined a much needed light on a subject that is prevalent in our society today. Through Trinity and her story, readers are exposed to all the struggles that people dealing with this disease go through on a daily basis- the self doubt, rejection and prejudices, the innate need for love and intimacy, and most of all, the difficult task of facing their own mortality. However, with all of that said, this is also a story of unconditional love and complete acceptance. This story will make you laugh. It will make you cry, and, at times, it will downright piss you off. Hang in there and keep reading because this story has the power to change the way you think and feel forever.
