Caught between the Great Depression and a massive heatwave, New York is a city on the edge. Businesses close up shop, breadlines grow longer and riots are almost a daily occurrence.

But when corrupt NYPD Detective Charlie Doherty is assigned to investigate a dead body in a flophouse, he knows there’s more here than meets the eye. He quickly discovers that the girl’s death is tied to one of the most powerful families in New York, and a kidnapping case that could tear the city apart. In a chase that takes Doherty from the mansions of Fifth Avenue to the slums of the Lower East Side all the way to City Hall itself, Doherty is in a race against time to find the people responsible for putting his city on a SLOW BURN.

Leah’s Review:
So different from my normal but loved it!!!

I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This book takes place in 1932 in New York City and is about a homicide detective named Charlie Doherty that has lost it all and is working on the graveyard shift during the depression. Detective Doherty answers a call about a dead body in a seedy motel that changes his life and career. I felt like I went back in time when I read this book. All the books I have read in this time period are always glamorous. This book was not. It was real. It showed the struggles the USA went through from the riots, dirty cops, prohibition, and the depression. It wasn’t emotionally heavy with these issues, but I definitely connected with the time period. Hmmmm the feelings I had for Detective Doherty like: dislike, empathy, sorrow, irritation, amusement, and hope for him. Having all these feelings for the main character makes a book better in my eyes. I hate a boring, monotone main character. Slow Burn was an enjoyable read, and I loved the storyline. It flowed nicely and all tied together well in the end and the editing was good. The only problem I had was the format on my kindle. It would break a sentence in half, and I would have a space between it. Well work the four hours it took to read and would make an awesome movie! I give this book FIVE STARS!!!

Buy Slow Burn here at Amazon!!
