Caitlin Conners is a loner; shy and artistic. Her only friend is her sister, Carly. When Carly dies in a car accident, Caitlin has never felt more alone. An overbearing mother makes her life impossible when she meets the boy next door, Dylan Rodgers. Dylan doesn’t fit in with the popular crowd either. He prefers skateboarding to football and is viewed by his fellow students as a pot head.

Dylan helps Caitlin deal with her grief and awakens her sexuality. Somehow these two misfits strike up a friendship and fall in love, while trying to keep their relationship a secret from Caitlin’s parents. Caitlin resorts to various methods to sneak out of the house and be with Dylan. As the stakes increase, emotions run high and passion ignites. The thrill of ‘getting away with it’ is so addictive and makes Caitlin feel invincible. How long can she get away with the lies before she is found out?

5 stars for My Secret Summer by Theresa Troutman!

Caitlin Conner is a shy, artistic teen.  She has spent her entire life
being compared to her popular older sister, Carly.  When Carly dies in a
car accident, things go from bad to worse for Caitlin.  While dealing with
the loss of their daughter , Caitlin’s parents can’t see beyond their own
grief.  This leaves Caitlin more alone than ever.  However, this all
changes when she begins a friendship with Dylan Rodgers.

Dylan is a “skater boy” who much like Caitlin just doesn’t fit in with the
popular crowd.  He helps Caitlin deal with her grief , and somewhere along
the way, the two fall in love.  Caitlin;s mother has become very over
protective of her since Carly’s death, and she has forbidden her from
dating.  As a result, Caitlin begins to sneak behind her parent’s back to
be with Dylan.  She finds sneaking around exciting, but how long can her
luck last?  Secrets always have a way of coming out.  What will happen when
her secrets are finally exposed?

Having lost my brother at a young age, I can totally relate to Caitlin.
Much like Caitlin’s parents, my parents were totally consumed by their own
grief which left me to try and navigate my way through my own feelings of
loss and loneliness.

This was a well written story that progressed at the perfect pace.  I fell
in love with Caitlin and found myself hoping she would find some
happiness.  If you are looking for a great read containing a mixture of
angst, friendship, and love, you should give this book a try!  *I was given
a copy of this book as a gift from Stephanie’s Book Reports in exchange for
an honest review.
