This is definitely a different story than I’m used to from this author.  Steffie’s other published works are erotica and this story definitely isn’t.  In Her Shadows is a story about a girl who’s suffered with a mental illness for years without any relief from medication to help her manage nor help from her therapists in deciding what was really wrong with her.

Her mother ends up having her committed so she can heal and the therapist can figure out what Anya’s illness really is.  This takes a long time as she’s not willing to open up and talk to people.  She stays in her room and refuses to leave.  She screams when she wakes up from sleep.  As she has nightmares and sleep paralysis.

One day, Chester, another patient in the treatment center walks into her room to see what the fuss is about.  His entry into her room changes everything for each of them.  They being a wonderful friendship that blossoms into something more.  No matter how hard the facility staff tries to keep them apart – she thrives on being around Chester and her treatment is coming a long pretty well.

There are several instances in this book that are scary to each of them, the doctors, and their parents.  I think Steffie Dawn has done a great job at stepping out of her erotica zone and into a different genre altogether – though this does have some romance included it’s not like her other series.
