After FSOG What’s The Next Big Thing?

By:  Cassia Brightmore ~ Deliciously Wicked Books

Fifty Shades of Grey.  This series by E.L. James took us by storm, I know that I for one was definitely caught up in it, reading and re-reading these books over and over.  Christian Grey still remains one of the community’s most popular book boyfriends – one of the most dominate dark king’s in the literary world.

So what now?  We’ve finished the books…we’ve read them again and again until our fingers have calluses from flipping the pages, until the batteries died again and again on our Kindles.  Here’s where I see things headed…

Revenge novels.  Dark themed romance.  Characters with a vendetta that aren’t afraid to chase down their enemies and exact their pre-meditated revenge.  More and more, we are seeing these types of books grow in popularity.  The genres are expanding and the readers are growing more brave in voicing what they want to see from our authors.  The alpha males from these books are making their presence known by reaching through our Kindles and grabbing us in a death lock, refusing to let go.  Kidnappings, murderers, brutal hit men – these are the new trends.  The darker and more disturbing the storylines become, the more we the reader are panting for them and pushing for authors to take it that one step further.

Authors such as Aleatha Romig, Lili St. Germain, CJ Roberts, Skye Callahan, Jaden Wilkes and of course, E.L James, just to name a few, are pushing the envelope of dark themes and they are delivering mind blowing, best selling books as they do it.

Have we always loved books such as these?  Maybe.  Maybe not.  I remember reading something around the time Fifty Shades of Grey was released – it was a one-liner comment, “women won’t watch porn, but they’ll read the shit out of it.”  I don’t believe this is necessarily true – we know what we like, we know what we will accept.  With the success of FSOG, it made it acceptable for readers to be more open and vocal about what their tastes are in books.  It allowed them to open their minds to new genres, genres that leave you reeling and wanting more.  I believe there’s a little wickedness in all of us, and whether we choose to watch it or read it – it’s exciting and thrilling to explore something a little different, something with some shock value.

In my opinion, we are going to see more and more books in this genre on the scene.  With the FSOG movie set to release next year and CJ Robert’s Dark Duet series being potentially optioned for a TV series – the door is wide open.  Readers will begin to explore and either become addicts or completely hate dark reads.

Its not Kansas anymore, its not a Yellow Brick road with HEA’s that everyone is craving. We are headed down a dark and twisty road and along the way we are in for some pain and excitement.  This Dorothy has definitely traded in her ruby slippers for a delicious pair of sexy heels, headed off to find the next wicked dark king.

Fifty Shades of Grey is a misrepresentation of what the BDSM lifestyle is about and the Character of Christian Grey is definitely not the “alpha male” I want to read about in romance books, but I understand why people who know nothing or very little about BDSM are drawn towards it.

That’s a great post! thanks for sharing it, Cassia!
And thank you for taking part in this awesome book tour! 😉

  4. I haven’t read FSOG b/c it’s just not a genre I enjoy, but I am totally down for dark and twisty books! I think that genres play off each other…when a movie about one subject is a hit, there are offshoots, I do think it’s the same with books.

    Terrific post!
