SYNOPSIS:

1971—In the tiny, backward town of Tulma, Tennessee, optimistic, bookish Caroline Carson unwittingly finds herself in the middle of a forbidden romance. Severely neglected by her family and forced to flee Tulma to protect her secrets, Caroline’s young life comes crashing down around her. She finds refuge in a new town, but the past always has a way of stretching around time and stirring up trouble.

When a new love comes into her life, she has to decide if she can give her heart to someone else, or if she will always be tied to someone she can’t have.

Review:4.5 Stars

I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I want to start off with a warning about the book.  It contains some controversial topics and language that may be hard for some to read.  With that being said I think that these topics were really important to the story line and they fit in to a book about two kids from different races who loved each other in the 1970’s.

I had not read a book like this one before and it felt good to really sink myself into something different.  The characters were very well written and so was the story.  As soon as I read the first page I was a goner.

This book had me from the prologue.  I started reading it and immediately wanted to read more.  I felt a strong need to hear Caroline’s story and I wan’t disappointed.  Poor Caroline was the sweetest girl but she had a rough life.  At the age of fifteen she was pretty much on her own with parents that could care less.  In her trying to take care of herself and in the journey I went on with her I saw that family isn’t the blood relatives but the people we decide to have in our lives.  It also shows that love is amazing and even when it isn’t accepted it can be wonderful.

I don’t want to give anything away so I will stop there but I will say that this story was very emotional.  At times my heart was breaking, other times I was so caught up in the feeling of love.  When it came to Caroline and her life I really felt for her.  As the story unfolded I was so angry at times with all of the people in her life.  Then I was so proud of her for being strong and being able to take care of herself.  My heart broke for her on a few occasions and I just wanted to grab her up and take care of her myself.

If you can handle the controversial topics and language I say read this book it is really a beautiful story.
